"It's Not Your Fault!"

You've probably heard plenty of standard health advice your whole life:- "Eat plenty of healthy, whole grains"- "Saturated fat will clog your arteries"- "Calories in, calories out"- "Everything in moderation"- "Eat the rainbow"- "Jogging will help you lose weight and get fit"- "Eat less, move more!"
And chances are, like most people, you've actually tried pretty hard to follow that standard health advice!But as you've approached middle age, the aches and pains have set in, nothing seems to stop the weight from creeping up, and you just don't feel like the vital, magical person you probably were in your younger years. You might even be feeling frustrated and unimpressed by the person you're seeing in the mirror these days. Your body is suffering...your self-esteem is suffering...and maybe your intimate moments are suffering. You feel tired and overwhelmed by work, family and household chores. Aging doesn't mean "getting old". You CAN feel like you did when you were younger -- or maybe even better! You aren't doomed by genetics or bad luck to play Russian Roulette with Type II diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, autoimmune disorders or any number of age-related conditions (i.e. arthritis, osteoporosis, weight gain, insulin resistance, etc.).
The reason you may be feeling like you're on a downhill health slide is because much of what we accept as conventional and standard health wisdom doesn't actually work with respect to human biology. As a species, humans evolved into the amazing beings we are today by eating meat and veggies, getting lots of comfortable aerobic exercise, and living in tune to the rhythms of the sun and the seasons. The good news is that we're still human, so if we get back to basics, our bodies respond beautifully to those natural and appropriate inputs. We feel better, we look better and we age gracefully.
But navigating modern life is like trying to crawl through a minefield with a hundred different maps. One map tells you that eating whole grains is the best thing you could do for your health; another says you can eat everything in moderation as long as you count calories; yet another advises going vegan to save your health and the planet. Or maybe try Atkins...the Mediterranean Diet...join a gym...eat plenty of protein...stay hydrated...and always get 8 to 10 hours of sleep!
A landslide of advice eventually overwhelms us, and we slip back to the comfortable familiar: binge on Netflix with a bowl of ice cream or a bag of potato chips and ignore the bloating, acid reflux, aching joints, low energy and expanding waistline.
